Is there an easier way (than this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHfN9yeuoew )to sidechain effects in SX3?
I mean JeeZe! That's anoying. Even following the steps in this tutorial, I don't really get a sidechain. I don't have the "compadre" compressor used in the video, just the compressor bundled with cubase, maybe I am doing it wrong?

Why does the vb-1 produce so many high frequency clicks? Is there any way around this without having to make it sound "soft"?
Are ther 2 versions of the vb-1? I have heard rumors of a silver colored one that doesn't produce clicks.

Are all audio tracks monophonic? Which is to say, can they only play one audio clip at a time. Overlaping segmants are not combined.

Thank you for your interest to our music.

Last summer we held a throat singing camp in Tuva.

We had 14 students from around the world - 8 of them were from the US, 2 from Australia
2 from Denmark, 1 from France, 1 from England.
After arriving in Tuva, the students spent 1 week in Kyzyl, the capital city.
They were able to see many tourist attractions, see a Tuvan shaman,
and attend the Naadym - National Harvest Celebration.

The students then went on to spend 1 week in the deep taiga, with members of the Tuvan throat singing group Chirgilchin,
learning various styles of throat singing, traditional Tuvan instruments, as well as the Tuvan language.

This summer, we are trying to get 2 groups to go to Tuva again, in either June or July.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Major problems with sonar 6

Recently, it's been taking a little longer than usual to save my project, it is getting big. The per project audio folder is about 1.3 gb. So even though it now takes several minutes for the save to happen, i thought it was to be sort of expected given the large size. Well, it started getting so slow during the save in the last week that if you went to click on the screen during the save the program would stop responding and crash, losing all unsaved data. That really sucked a few times this week.

Well, trying to be patient, i started just letting the computer do it's thing for several minutes during the save. Last night every time i tried to save, eventually (after about 8-10 minutes) sonar just closed it's self without warning or saving!

I tried everything INCLUDING wiping the hard drive clean and reinstalling all my software/ pluggins etc. Still giving me that awefull error!

I have ad-aware and avg running on the computer and am running the latest update of sonar.

WTF!?!

I am happy to announce that my new solo album has been released by the US label "New Albion"!

Here is the link about the album at New Albion's web site : www.newalbion.com/NA131

This is an album of "solo acoustic guitar and live electronics". The whole album was recorded in real-time without any overdubs. I played the acoustic guitar and controlled the live electronics at the same time.
During the making of this album, Ovation Custom Legend 1869 acoustic guitar, TC Electronic Fireworx multi effects processor, Behringer FCB1010 midi foot controller and the software Audiomulch were used.

Seattle, Wa June 22, 2006 -- The Seattle Microtonal Guitar Festival brings together local and international acclaimed guitarists who are dedicated to exploring the musical universe of the “notes between the notes”. Western music is commonly played in a twelve note equal tempered system that compromises the basic physical laws of how sound is produced so that musicians can play in twelve different keys and stay relatively “in tune”. Musicians and music lovers – professional and amateur alike- will learn about why western music is generally “a little out of tune”, and will be offered demonstrations and performances exploring alternative tunings, temperaments and guitar systems by leaders in the microtonal guitar movement, Jon Catler, Neil Haverstick , Tom Baker, and Chris Morda. Innovative and rare instruments, including the single string monochord, fretless guitar, 19 and 34-tone Equal Temperament guitar, guitar in Extended Just Intonation, lap slide guitar, and 12-tone ultra plus guitars will all be featured, turning the head of the most knowledgeable guitar officianados and novices alike.

About The Artists

Jon Catler is one of the world's leading innovators on microtonal guitar. For many years, Catler's life has been devoted to the exploration of the "notes-between-the-notes," or microtonal music. Specifically, he has devised his own system of tuning based on Just Intonation or the pure intervals of the Harmonic Series. He has redesigned his guitar to allow an unprecedented range of consonance and dissonance, alternating between a 62-note per octave fretted guitar and a fretless.

Noted for his work with legendary composer, La Monte Young, Mr. Catler was a featured soloist on the Gramavision double-CD La Monte Young and the Forever Bad Blues Band. He has also appeared as composer and performer on the Futurismo/Futurismi Festival, Manca Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Quebec Festival d'Ete, the Angelica Festival and the American Festival of Microtonal Music of which he is co-founder. Catler performed in the world premier version of Ives' 'Universe Symphony' at Lincoln Center, a climax of AFMM's 20-year history. Catler also performed on the original Harry Partch guitars with Newband in a performance of Partch's 'Oedipus' at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.

Neil Haverstick is one of the most sought after session players in Denver, Colorado. Haverstick has performed in a number of different situations, such as playing and recording with the Colorado Symphony, playing in orchestras backing such artists as Bob Hope, Dinah Shore, Charley Pride, and with his own bands he has opened shows for B.B.King, Steve Miller, and King Sunny Ade; he has also backed up blues greats Jim Schwall and Joe Houston. As a freelance guitarist he has played blues, jazz, classical, country, flamenco, and folk, as well as plays, and many private functions.

Haverstick is also an accomplish composer, author, and educator. As a composer, Haverstick won Guitar Player magazine's 1992 Ultimate Guitar Competition (Experimental Division) with a 19 tone piece, "Spider Chimes." He also won the 1996 arts Innovation Award in Denver for another 19 tone song, "Jimmy and Joe," and the 1999 Composition Fellowship from the Colorado Council on the Arts. As an author, Haverstick has written for Guitar Player and Cadence, and has written two music theory books. The late studio guitarist Tommy Tedesco, who called it “A great book, praised “The Form of No Forms”. Neil's latest book, "19 Tones: A New Beginning," is a look at the 19 tone system of tuning which Haverstick has been working in since 1989. As an instructor, Haverstick has taught hundreds of students, both privately and in classes. In October 2004, he taught a seminar on tunings at Berklee College of Music, on the invitation of fusion guitar maestro David Fiuczynski.

Guitarist Tom Baker has been active as a composer, performer and music producer in the Seattle new-music scene since 1994. He is the artistic director of the Seattle Composers' Salon, and co-founder of the Seattle EXperimental Opera (SEXO). Tom performs on fretted and fretless guitars, and has worked with many innovative musicians, including Stuart Dempster, William O. Smith, Christian Asplund, Chinary Ung, Ellen Fullman and Henry Threadgill. His first solo CD Sounding the Curve was released on the label Present Sounds in 2002.

The Tom Baker Quartet features drummer Greg Campbell, clarinetist Jesse Canterbury and bassist Brian Cobb. The Quartet has diverse musical backgrounds, which include jazz, modern classical, world music, and free improvisation. They have been working as a quartet since November of 2004, playing music by Baker and Cobb, as well as crafting beautiful and haunting improvisations. Their music blurs the boundaries between notated music and free improvisation; the unique sonic landscapes that result are grounded in history, while pushing at the boundaries of avant-jazz music.

Chris Morda has been active on the Seattle blues scene since 1999 and has developed a playing style firmly rooted in traditional blues along outside influences from his love of Indian Music he was exposed to while in the Ethnomusicology Program at the University of Washington. Chris is a private music instructor and has led blues ensembles at The Seattle Drum School, taught Blues History courses at the University of Washington’s Extension program, and taught private and group classes on The Overtone Series and its relationship to Vibrational Healing with Sound. Chris is an accomplished lap slide guitarist and has recently taken up The 12 tone ultra plus guitar designed by Jon Catler.

Joining Chris in The Stone Crazy Blues Band are Forrest Giberson (Bachelor of Music Degree in Studio Music and Jazz with Specialization in Performance, Music Theory, Music History and Composition, University of Miami) and drummer Lorne Watson (Bachelors of Music Education and Percussion Performance, Central Michigan University). The band recently released its debut recording, Barnyard Boogie and has been receiving quite a bit of airplay on Internet and International Radio. Their cover of Sonny Boy Williamson’s Help Me has currently on been on RadioWave Monitor’s Top 20 Contemporary Blues Charts for Internet Radio for 15 consecutive weeks.
Method 1. You can't implant a melodic addiction unless you slowly train the recipiant with a sonic pattern. For pop radio the subliminal aspect works because the melody has already been intrained. So you may be able to activate a memory of a melody that the listener finishes from their memory. You could play only the first part and the rest might subliminally be filled in. Then you could do a series of other strong melody beginnings, thus creating a whole new piece of music out of last weeks pop trash.
Method 2. Spread psychotropics amongst the listeners and project a mind image propelled by hidden theta waves imbedded in the musics rythmic patterns. How are you at astral projecting?

Someone I work with was telling me that major keys aren't actually perfect for a non-continuous instrument, even if the instrument has been tuned for a specific key.

I have heard about and think I understand just intonation, but what she said is that for a true perfect key on a non-continuous instrument, you have to choose more than which key you want that instrument to play, you have to decide on the octave too. She said this is why most of the original organ accompaniment in early christian hymnic pieces was played in minor keys, and then at the end resolved to major, middle C. She also said that this is why barbershop quartets sound so smooth, people can make very slight intonation changes on the fly to yield perfect harmony, even across key changes.

On a similar note, I just found this site which is pretty neat:
http://www.wmich.edu/mus-theo/groven/compare.html

So my question is, since we have all of this digital equipment now, why are we still using well-tempered tuning? It's not like we have to re-tune our instruments... it just seems like everybody is stuck in piano-mode.

I unfortunately lost the contact info for the other 8 ppl that took the workshop with us here in portland...

if you are interested at all in audio or video creation and mixing and don't have thousands to spend on commercial, closed source software, this is really worth looking into. it is available for free at puredata.info. if u are familiar with max or reaktor, the interface will be almost intuitive for u, with objects "patched" together in a graphical environment which models the flow of commands. it is kind of hard to get off the ground (we're getting there), but once u do, u can do a lot with it.

Constant barrage of music may leave us hearing things

EBEN HARRELL

EXPOSURE to music in everyday life is leading to an increase in the incidence of a medical condition in which a song or piece of music plays continuously in a person's head, scientists claimed yesterday.

Musical hallucination is a condition in which the brain hears phantom music. It is different than the common occurrence of "having a song stuck in your head" because the music is continuous and perceived to be real and external.

"Having a song in your head is quite normal every now and then. But musical hallucinations can be quite distressing," Dr Victor Aziz, a psychiatrist at Whitchurch Hospital in Cardiff, said. "People find they can't sleep, can't think properly. It may interrupt them from doing something. It is serious."

Dr Aziz and a co-researcher, Dr Nick Warner, have published an analysis of 30 cases of the disorder in Psychopathology Journal. Based on their findings, Dr Aziz predicts musical hallucinations will become more common as people continue to be inundated by music from radios and televisions, and in lifts, gyms and shopping centres.

"People who are bombarded by music tend to hear music," he said. "I suspect the rates of hallucinations in orchestral players will be higher than normal. So, as we hear more music every day, cases will probably go up."

Officially, one in 10,000 people over the age of 65 suffers from the condition, but Dr Aziz believes the true number to be higher because of poor diagnosis and because many younger people have it as well.

Some patients say they learn to live with hallucinations, even finding them a source of comfort. One 28-year-old American said the music in his head reflected his emotional state. "It just plays in the background like the soundtrack playing in the background of a movie. Sometimes the music stops and it makes me feel out of place and time, like something's wrong."

In two-thirds of cases, patients reported hearing religious music; six heard Abide With Me.

"We speculate that people will hallucinate both pop and classical music in the future, because it is now more commonplace in our everyday lives," Dr Aziz said.

Research by neuroscientists has shown that the human brain uses special networks of neurons to perceive music. Brain scans of patients with musical hallucinations has shown these networks working almost identically during hallucination and during actual hearing: to the patients, the music is perceived to be real.

Dr Aziz said a third of the people in his study were deaf or hard of hearing. A vast majority of the others lived in isolation.

These results suggest musical hallucinations occur when people move from a stimulus-rich environment to one with few auditory stimuli.

With no sound coming via the ears, the brain generates random impulses it interprets to be sound. The brain then matches these impulses to memories of music, and a song in the head begins. That may explain how Beethoven was able to compose music even after losing his hearing.
to understand FFT

I am trying to get convolution to work in PD - not just the demo patches but to be able to build a convolution patch from the ground up.

I understand that FFT takes a time domain signal and converts it to frequency domain. I understand how to make a hanning window. What I thought came out of the fft~ object in PD each sample was a list of frequency strengths: If the sample size is 64 then the sample would have 64 bins with each bin representing the strength of the frequency N*48000/N where N is the bin number. If you wanted to know the strength of the frequency 24000 Hz you would check bin 32. Of course ifft~ takes this data and turns it back into the time doman signal.

Of course this doesnt work, at least using this understanding I can get any fft business to work in PD, and the documentation sucks for low level explainations.

Can someone help me to understand fft, and specifically how it works in PD?
Or if you can get me to understand fft I might be able to translate that understanding to PD on my own. I have the Curtis Roads "the Computer Music Tutorial" but somewhere between the simple pictures and the sums as M goes from 0 to N-1 I get confused.

Could sound move at the speed of light?
1 November 2005

Can sound waves travel faster than the speed of light? Yes, says Joel Mobley, a physicist at the University of Mississippi in the US. In simulations Mobley has shown that ultrasound pulses could move at "superluminal" speeds when they enter water that contains thousands of tiny plastic beads.

Waves moving in a dispersive medium are described by a phase velocity and a group velocity. The phase velocity is the speed at which a wave of a single wavelength moves, and is typically about 1.5 kilometres per second for sound waves in water. However, pulses of light or sound actually contain a range of wavelengths that all move at different speeds: the group velocity is the speed at which the pulse itself moves.

In recent years, it has been shown experimentally that the group velocity of a laser pulse can exceed the speed of light in vacuum -- 300,000,000 metres per second -- in certain situations. However, special relativity is not violated in these experiments because they do not involve the transfer of information, matter or energy.

Measuring group velocity (pic: http://physicsweb.org/objects/news/9/11/1/051101.jpg)
Mobley has now calculated that the group velocity of a pulse of high-frequency sound waves could be increased by five orders of magnitude by sending it through a small chamber that contains about 8 millilitres of water and some 400,000 tiny plastic spheres. This means that the group velocity would exceed the speed of light in vacuum. The spheres have diameters of about 0.1 mm and account for about 5% of the volume of the water-bead mixture.

The increase in speed is caused by dispersion -- the phenomenon that causes different wavelengths to move at different phase velocities. When the pulse enters the mixture it experiences severe dispersion, which causes the different wavelengths that make up the pulse to travel at very different speeds. This changes the shape of the pulse and can result in the pulse itself moving faster than the speed of light. However, the dispersion also significantly reduces the intensity of the pulses.

"It has long been recognised that such velocities should be possible with acoustic waves," Mobley told PhysicsWeb. "My work shows that it can be done in a specific and very simple system and that extreme conditions are not necessary."

Mobley is now planning experiments to observe the superluminal velocities at the National Center for Physical Acoustics at Mississippi. The main challenge will be to increase the signal-to-noise ratio so that it is possible to detect the pulses, which will have been greatly reduced in intensity by the dispersion.

I'm Dave the singer in the band Reactor. The last track on our debut album is a dark and bendy vocoder epic called 'Reaching Out'. It uses the traditional 'voice through chords' vocoder technique with one crucial difference. All the notes in the chords are independent lines which bend in different directions to make the chord changes. It's very trippy!
